Communications Officer Catherine Spooner has joined the Better Barnsley team to support them with the Accumulator Challenge this February. The Challenge is hosted by Barnsley Hospice to raise money for those who need specialist compassionate care in the Barnsley region. All 28 teams taking part start with a loan of £28 and have 28 days to compete against the other businesses to see who can make the most profit. The charity is encouraging teams to think creatively and choose innovative methods of raising money.

The other Better Barnsley team members are Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council representatives, Anne Untisz, the Town Centre Services Manager and Sarah McHale, the Town Centre Major Projects Officer.

The team is focusing on organising a series of fundraising events, with the first event being the Tripe Challenge, held in the Market Parade Café, where challengers Gordon and Nikki went head to head to see who could eat the most tripe in twenty minutes. To raise money, the public were encouraged to buy coloured raffle tickets depending on who they thought would win, with the winning tickets entering a prize draw.

The winner was Gordon, who managed to finish most of his tripe, with the rest wrapped up for members of the public who wished to try it at home. Brian Seale from the May Day Green Market correctly guessed the winner and won a bottle of wine in the prize draw.

When the challenge ends on 28 February, there will be prizes for the team that makes the most profit and the team with the most innovative fundraising idea.
