Raising Aspirations Project – 13/12/17

Raising Aspirations Project Certificate

Employment and Skills Manager Adeana Raper and Communications Officer Catherine Spooner have volunteered as coaches for the Raising Aspirations project, launched by Barnsley College in partnership with Horizon Community College, Holy Trinity and Dearne ALC.

The innovative scheme offers students who are vulnerable to academic under-achievement an opportunity to receive coaching and support from an inspirational volunteer from the local community.

Regular one-to-one contact with a coach has been proven to raise children’s confidence, academic and employment aspirations and, ultimately, improve their academic achievement.

Raising Aspirations Project Adeana is coaching a girl in Y7 at Horizon School and Catherine is coaching a boy in Y7 at Dearne ALC. The pupils stay in the scheme for the duration of their time at the school and feedback so far is very positive.

Catherine said, “I am finding the meetings very enjoyable and it is rewarding that my student finds our meetings interesting and useful and he has given positive feedback to school. Hopefully the scheme will motivate him to aim high in his studies and to make wise choices for the future.”

Adeana is a mentor as part of her ongoing relationship with Horizon Community College. She sees this as a great opportunity to inspire and guide a young person to reach their goals.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your time and support this year with the Raising Aspirations programme. It is lovely to work alongside coaches, who give up their time to inspire, motivate and support our young people and help them realise their potential.
