Henry Boot Construction, in conjunction with Northern Regeneration and Barnsley College, will be launching the Better Barnsley Skills Village later this year. The Skills Village will bridge the gap between education and industry as students will develop practical and demand led skills in a real life working environment.

By capitalising on the skills, experience and knowledge of each partner, the target is to maximise the skill provision and job creation as part of the Better Barnsley development. In addition, the Skills Village will engage future talent through workshops and site visits and will utilise the Skills Village out of term by engaging with hard to reach user groups.

The Skills Village objectives:

1.   Reduce the skills shortages in the construction industry.

2.   Increase the appeal of a career in construction.

3.   Increased access to training.

5.   Bring education and industry closer together.

6.   Match employment opportunities to students from the Skills Village.

7.   Increase the percentage of women in construction.

8.   Expose students to a 'live' site experience earlier to establish if they are suited to a career in construction.

9.   Target hard to reach groups for Skills Village training opportunities.

Project Director Ryan O’Loughlin said: "The Better Barnsley development is a once in a lifetime opportunity. This Skills Village will capitalise on the variety of work packages to create an employment and skills legacy for the people of Barnsley.”

"With the industry in need of identifying and recruiting new talent, Northern Regeneration are extremely proud to be working alongside establishing partners, Henry Boot Construction and Barnsley College, to support students with genuine work experience and employment opportunities."

Graham Ratcliffe, Managing Director, Northern Regeneration

“We see this project as an exciting and innovative approach bringing education and industry together for the benefit of our learners. It provides an excellent opportunity for learners to gain invaluable experience of industry working practices and ensure that, at the end of their course, they are ready for employment.”

Chris Webb, Chief Executive and Principal, Barnsley College
