The official opening ceremony for the new helipad at the Northern General Hospital took place at 2pm on Tuesday 20September 2016, and was opened by HRH The Duke of York.

The event was attended by Henry Boot Construction site team members Steve Green, Brian Mitchell, Ryan Spencer and Paul Cheung.

The state-of-the art £2 million helipad, which gives critically ill patients quicker access to life-saving medical treatment, opened in June after an amazing fundraising appeal by Sheffield Hospitals Charity, which raised over £1.95 million, with support from fundraising partners Westfield Health and B. Braun.

Since the helipad opened four months ago, it has already provided life-saving treatment to 45 patients from across South Yorkshire, who were brought into the Major Trauma Centre at the Northern General Hospital. The Major Trauma Centre is one of only 26 specialist centres in the country and treats around 1200 patients each year, 500 of which have life-threatening injuries.

Sir Andrew Cash, Chief Executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I am honoured to welcome HRH The Duke of York to officially open the new helipad at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This state of the art new facility has been made a reality thanks to the generosity of local people, businesses and Sheffield Hospitals Charity, enabling us to provide life-saving care as quickly as possible.”

“I am extremely proud to be able to celebrate the building of such an industry leading new helipad and I would like to thank Henry Boot for their contribution to the project. The helipad has already made a significant impact and has helped to save precious lives and given people the best possible outcome following their accident or medical emergency. This would not have been achievable without the generous fundraising support and compassion of local people and businesses who have wanted to help others in their community.”

David Reynolds, Director of Sheffield Hospitals Charity

“We are proud to be involved in the project to provide a new helipad for Northern General Hospital. Working collaboratively, our site team and the Northern General Hospital staff have created a fantastic new facility which will help save lives and provide access to life-saving treatment to those who need it. It was great to join the team for the opening ceremony and to meet those key stakeholders involved in the project, including fundraisers and some of those who have benefitted from the air ambulance services.”
