University student works on Better Barnsley project during two week placement – 26/07/16

Better BarnsleyLewis Mannion, work experience at Barnsley

Student Lewis Mannion has recently completed a two week work experience placement at the Better Barnsley development project. Aged 19, Lewis is currently studying Engineering and Design Management at Loughborough University. Having previously completed work experience at the Fox Valley site, Lewis was keen to gain further work experience from Henry Boot Construction.

Lewis’ two week placement began on 4 July 2016 and during his first week, Lewis worked in Henry Boot Construction’s office based in The Civic on Eldon Street. Here, he spent time with planners and quantity surveyors, pricing up various jobs for the new library works by comparing quotes to ensure the best value for money.

Lewis also attended meetings and enjoyed learning about the build strategy of the Met Centre from the architect, client and engineers. This allowed him to understand the various elements of the build and how differently each department works and the impact this has on others. He found this especially useful because he had covered this topic at university, and enabled him to apply the theory into practice.

During his second week, Lewis worked alongside Site Manager Phil Horsfield on the new May Day Green Market Site. Lewis observed different trades at work and learned how to construct elements of the temporary market, viewing the drawings and the finished product to discover how key aspects have been constructed. He also discovered how a site compound is set up before work can commence.

Lewis commented, “My two weeks with Henry Boot Construction on the Better Barnsley scheme have been a valuable experience and a different type of project to what I’ve worked on before. I have enjoyed my time both in the office and on site and have learnt a lot of new things, as well as seeing things I’ve learnt at university on a live project. I’d like to thank Henry Boot Construction for giving me this opportunity and will keep monitoring the progress of the Better Barnsley scheme.”
