Henry Boot Construction have attended this year’s I Know I Can (IKIC) Big Challenge in Barnsley, which invites young people aged 9-19 to create and run their own business.

HBC colleagues Ryan O’Loughlin, Project Director and Adeana Raper, Employment & Skills Manager both attended the IKIC events to show support for the Challenge.

During the Challenge, teams of up to eight students were invited to submit a business idea. Each successful team was paired with a mentor from the business community, who invested £25 an one hour of their time each month to guide and support their team as they grew their business idea. Once a profit was made, the £25 was returned to the investor, with the remaining profit belonging to the students.

The overall winners of IKIC were decided at a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style pitch in June. With four award levels, Adeana and Ryan attended two of the events, for Horizon Community College and Wilthorpe Primary School. These events celebrated the student’s achievements above and beyond their normal curricular activities and promoted their confidence in their lives outside of school.

Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “The IKIC Big Challenge offers a unique opportunity for young people to explore and broaden their future career prospects, getting an insight into what starting a business involves. It grows the characteristics that are needed in business today and allows them to learn, first-hand, what works in the real world.”

“We were delighted to celebrate the achievements of the students participating in the I Know I Can Big Challenge. It was a unique opportunity for the students to demonstrate their business skills, whilst being supported by business leaders from the private sector. The winners should be congratulated and showed real potential to become the next generation of entrepreneurs.”
