Last week, work commenced on the internal fit out of the May Day Green Market, as part of the Better Barnsley redevelopment project in Barnsley town centre. Works have also begun to install services to the stalls, and the timber staircase has now been fitted to the rear entrance.

Working with Barnsley Community Build (BCB), Moorland College, Henry Boot Construction has been able to offer work placements at Barnsley to two of their apprentices, Leah Ferguson from Royston and Daniel Beaumont from Lundwood, both studying Level Two General Construction. Daniel is also currently undertaking Maths and English qualifications.

Although Daniel has experience working in the construction industry, he has found it difficult to find employment, due to having no formal qualifications.

Leah is a qualified Rail Engineer, but has found it impossible to find a job in the Rail Industry. By retraining, Leah is hoping to combine her experience in the Rail and Construction Industries to improve her chances of securing a full time permanent position.

The course, through BCB, will give both apprentices an industry recognised qualification, a CSCS Card and, by having work experience, an employer reference which will hopefully lead to a permanent position in the future.

Daniel and Leah are both looking forward to working on the Better Barnsley project as Barnsley is their home town, giving them a sense of pride in their work. Daniel would like his children to be inspired and proud that their Dad is involved in the redevelopment of Barnsley.

Both Daniel and Leah are enjoying being on site, in a work environment, being treated as equals by the whole site team. They appreciate the time people are giving them, explaining procedures and what is happening on site. They also like knowing what they are going to be doing on site in the morning.

Having this work experience has made Daniel and Leah even more determined to fulfil their long term goal of finding a job in the Construction Industry.
