Step Up into Construction participants visit Snowhill Retail Park, Wakefield – 01/08/16

KIERGroundworkParticipants from Groundworks visit Snowhill Retail Park

A group of participants from training provider Groundworks visited Kier Property’s Snowhill Retail Park in Wakefield on Tuesday 12 July, as part of the Step Up into Construction programme.

The programme, which is funded by CITB and Leeds LEP, is a collaborative partnership set up to deliver work placements, training, further education and employment in the construction industry in Yorkshire. The project is designed to help support a growing need to attract more people into the industry and to meet any potential skills gaps across the Leeds City Region.

Contracts Manager Steve Green and Project Manager Mat Clarke provided a workshop on careers in construction, along with an overview of the Snowhill project. This concluded with the participants taking a tour around the development site.

Steve said of the visit, “It is encouraging to see people who are keen to enter into the construction industry, especially as there is an industry-wide shortage of skilled personnel. We are happy to assist them in choosing which field they may be best suited based on what the feel they'll enjoy, and to expand their knowledge of other trades not considered previously. The visit went very well, with opportunities for the participants to speak with current trade personnel on site. Further site visits are planned for the future.”
