Fox Valley is a master redevelopment of the former 28 acre Outokumpu steelworks site in Stocksbridge, which brings a new retail park to this area of Sheffield.

Work on the project began in February 2014, with the demolition of Tata garages, Outokumpu offices and Tata Warehouse, followed by a year of land remediation works. Running alongside this was the construction of the new Tata Warehouse and a new outfall 21, a new oil skimmer facility within Tata’s works. Several existing buildings were refurbished and converted into office spaces, along with the construction of two new office blocks. The construction of the main retail area was then completed, including a new HV substation, with added infrastructure works including a new T junction and roundabout.

The development is designed to be in keeping with the area’s industrial heritage and fulfils the requirement for a new retail and commercial development in this area. Fox Valley incorporates 32 retail units, café and restaurant facilities, office space, new housing and landscaping. Also included is a 600 space customer car park with fountain and outdoor seating areas.

Dave Goddard, Senior Project Manager at Stocksbridge, said, “Stocksbridge has been a complex project involving the remediation and complete redevelopment of a former steelworks. It was a major undertaking for our company and has successfully transformed the north Sheffield site into a vibrant shopping centre creating 900 jobs for the local community.”

An Absolutely Fabulous Opening Ceremony

The new Fox Valley development was officially opened on Thursday 16 June by Joanna Lumley OBE.

Joanna, who played Patsy in the famous comedy series Absolutely Fabulous, was a guest of honour at the official opening event, which marked the launch of the first stores in a retail line up which is set to put this part of north Sheffield on the map as a major retail destination.

With a huge crowd gathered, children cut the ribbons on the stores whilst the crowds were entertained by the music of Deepcar Brass Band and Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir.

Ms Lumley, whose new Absolutely Fabulous film has now been released, told the crowd she was delighted to have been asked to open the new centre and spent time chatting to shoppers in some of the newly opened stores. Joanna also visited the Stonebridge Homes development to launch their new show home on the site, where 118 new houses will be built next to the shopping centre.

Amanda Holmes, head of Communications at Dransfield Properties, said: “The official opening at Fox Valley was an extremely proud day for everyone involved in the project including of course the whole team from our main contractors Henry Boot Construction.

“Since the opening it has been fantastic to see the centre so busy and to hear the many positive comments about the quality of the buildings, the architecture and the materials at Fox Valley. We’re looking forward to our second phase of store openings on September 1st.”

Tony Shaw, Director at Henry Boot Construction attended the event and said, “The Fox Valley project required a significant team effort and after all the hard work it was great to find so many people at the Opening Ceremony to see the development brought to life. We are proud to have been involved in such a significant development that provides a whole new retail and leisure experience for the people in the surrounding area.”
