Henry Boot Construction’s Eastern Division has recently completed the Acre Mill shell refurbishment project in Huddersfield for Pennine Property Partnership LLP.

The Pennine Property Partnership LLP is an innovative collaboration between Henry Boot Developments Limited and Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.  The aim of the joint venture was to create healthcare facilities fit for the 21st century and also to realise the potential of surplus property assets to generate the capital investment required to deliver improved medical services for the Calderdale and Huddersfield area.

The shell walls included rebuilding a 3 storey gable end with provision of a designed temporary works façade retentionsystem, extensive repairs to the timber roof structure and recovering a mix of reclaimed stone tiles and blue slates.

Internally, the building was fully stripped out back to the structure, with new load bearing floors, lift shafts and stairwells introduced in advance of the fit out.

Externally, the ponds that were used in the mill to cool the wire were removed to provide extensive parking for patients whilst a new wildlife pond was constructed for feeding the local habitat.

Works started late January 2013and was completed during December 2013.  The fit out phase is due to be completed by the end of 2014 under a separate contract.

“The refurbishment of the Grade II listed Acre Mill presented the site team with several technical challenges.  The site team worked closely with the local conservation officer to make sure that the character of the building was retained and we are really pleased with the finished product”
