‘Achievement Through Adversity’ runner up – 28/11/11

HBC’s Senior Site Manager Derek McDonald came ‘runner up’ in an award ceremony that recognises hard work and achievements through adversity in the Sheffield region.

Derek was nominated for the South Yorkshire Construction and Training Group’s ‘Achievement Through Adversity Award’, and came a respectable second at the awards ceremony this month.

Despite a tough upbringing and being diagnosed with dyslexia aged 16, Derek has worked his way through the ranks at HBC, rising from a General Operative on a Youth Training Scheme to Senior Site Manager, picking up a number of prestigious Gold Awards from the Considerate Constructor’s Scheme and winning the HBC Safety Award in 2010.

Outside of work, he spearheaded a fundraising campaign that raised £6000 to send a child with Batten’s Disease to Disneyworld in Florida – the disease is rare and fatal, and the family were overwhelmed by his kind efforts.

“Well done to Derek for achieving the runners up award, and for all of his work for Henry Boot Construction and the wider community – he is an asset to the company and long may his efforts continue.”
