HBC creating jobs in Scunthorpe – 03/08/11

The Telegraph

Henry Boot Construction’s Eastern Division has just created a joinery apprenticeship on their Westcliffe School Site, helping a determined young person get a foot on the construction career ladder.

Ryan Thackeray, 17, is attending a joinery course at Llite Training in Scunthorpe and passes the HBC site every day on his way to class – over a period of weeks he kept dropping in and asking if there were any opportunities for work.

Senior Project Manager Paul Day was impressed with his tenacity and spoke to subcontractor Plaken Joinery, who are currently working on the site.

Plaken agreed to take Ryan on and develop his experience alongside his vocational training, with Henry Boot Construction providing support on site.

In North Lincolnshire, 11.6% of 18-24 year olds are currently claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance, and the creation of training roles like this gives young people a chance to enter the tough construction job market.

“It’s definitely something more people should go for. No-one gives people a chance because they’ve got no experience, but you can’t get experience unless someone gives you a chance. Henry Boot and Plaken have given me that chance.”
