Part of The Glass Works, a flagship redevelopment scheme funded by Barnsley Council, the brand-new Library @ the Lightbox offers a unique range of learning, technology and event opportunities in Barnsley town centre.
The new four-storey building forms the cornerstone of the project and is a welcoming hub for the local community.
The Library @ the Lightbox is part of The Glass Works, a wider scheme to redevelop and transform Barnsley town centre.
With its striking modern design and transparent glass exterior, the library illuminates the new town square. Going far beyond the typical library offer, the impressive facility has four floors providing a range of digital services including cutting-edge virtual reality, a training suite, tablet computers and other innovative technology. The building’s low energy design makes it economical and sustainable, and the top floor provides opportunities for functions and events.
A range of facilities encourage community groups to make use of the building’s space for large events, workshops and activities. The fully accessible, modern building will suit all needs and includes a sanctuary room for people with autism, a community event space with a roof terrace, and a new café, bar and restaurant, Falco Lounge.

CCS National Site award
We’re confident that The Glass Works and improvements to the wider town centre will have a significantly positive impact for Barnsley residents. It will provide a vibrant and modern town centre, creating more and better jobs and good business growth, strengthening our visitor economy and protecting the borough for future generations.
Sarah Norman, Chief Executive, Barnsley Council
The project has consistently received very high scores in Considerate Constructor Scheme inspections, receiving a Silver Award at the National Site Awards 2019 for the Library @ the Lightbox building in 2019. The level of input with the community was described as “unprecedented” by the CCS panel.
Throughout the project, the local community was consulted every step of the way, with a dedicated Better Barnsley shop showing the latest plans and updates. Our site team were involved in many community initiatives which will lead a lasting legacy in Barnsley, including:
- Volunteering and support of local events
- Charitable donations
- Educational site visits and tours
- Work experience placements
- Support through the Better Barnsley Bond
The level of input with the community is unprecedented. I think it’s quite an experience to come down here and see what changes have been made.
