Thousands attend opening of new Barnsley Markets

The Barnsley Markets has now officially opened after a ceremony on Saturday 3 November, attended by thousands of people. The new location in The Glass Works will ensure the historic market remains at the heart of the town centre, now and in the future.

The new location in The Glass Works will ensure the historic market remains at the heart of the town centre, now and in the future. To mark the opening, The Mayor of Barnsley Cllr Steve Green rang the traditional market bell following a speech from Leader of Barnsley Council, Sir Steve Houghton. Strategic Business Manager Dave Woodhouse attended the official ribbon cutting. The day’s celebrations included family entertainment, with live music and celebrity lookalikes. New Market Mascot Veggie was also introduced for the first time and we provided hundreds of golden branded balloons for the event.

The Markets have already received a positive response from the local community, with many praising the layout and spacious, open feel of the building. The opening marks another major milestone for our work on the town centre regeneration project, following the opening of the Food Hall area on Saturday 1 September. The site team worked hard to finish the Markets in time for the new traders to settle in, allowing them to start trading in the lead up to Christmas.

Our brilliant market has always been – and will always be – at the heart of Barnsley. We’re famous for our market and the traders who choose to sell their goods in it, which is why the new Barnsley Market is the centrepiece of The Glass Works and regenerated town centre.

Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place

The opening of Barnsley Markets marks a new era for the community, whilst retaining the traditional heritage and values of trading great quality, locally produced products. As a company, we are really proud to be associated with this transformative project, as many of our employees are born and bred in the area. We look forward to the completion of the public realm works, providing valuable open space in the town centre.

Dave Woodhouse, Strategic Business Manager, Henry Boot Construction

We are grateful to Barnsley Council for supporting our ideas for the new market hall and to Henry Boot Construction for delivering it on site. We congratulate everyone involved in reaching this major milestone in the transformation of Barnsley town centre.
