Recognised for outstanding regeneration at RICS Awards

Our work to regenerate Barnsley town centre has led to our first ever award at the prestigious RICS Yorkshire & Humber Awards, held on Friday 17 March.

The Glass Works Phase 1 won the Regeneration Award at this year’s RICS ceremony in Leeds. The award honours exceptional improvements to a range of regeneration schemes. It marks the seventh award win, making this project one of our most successful in recent history.

The award recognised the first phase of Barnsley Council’s ambitious £180 million project to revitalise Barnsley's town centre, including a new reimagined market hall and food court – Market Kitchen, new state-of-the-art Library @ the Lightbox, and public realm works. On receiving the award, Operations Director Tony Shaw dedicated the win to our colleague Dave Woodhouse, who was a Chartered Surveyor and always led our award submissions.

We are delighted to have secured the RICS regeneration award against some very tough competition. The transformation of Barnsley town centre is an outstanding achievement and the full project team are justly proud to have been recognised for this.

The judges said: “The Glass Works is an ambitious local authority led project which is revitalising the Town Centre of Barnsley. The first phase which comprises a new reimagined market hall with food court and business support has been completed and the judges were impressed with the re-use of the existing structure to provide vibrant and attractive market halls. The market is already well used and the council’s success has been predicated on keeping the market open during the complex development process ensuring the vitality of the town centre during construction. It was clear to see the thorough engagement, consultation and ownership of the project within the Barnsley communities. Well worth a visit!”

Two of our other iconic projects were also shortlisted for awards; The Beacon, an international sports centre for the University of Hull, and the restoration of St George’s Hall for Bradford Council.

The RICS Awards are one of the most prestigious construction industry awards in the region. As a regional winner, The Glass Works will now go forward to the Grand Final in London on Friday 4 October.
