In the Spotlight: An interview with Trainee Technician Harry Rodgers

We spoke to Trainee Technician, Harry Rodgers who is based on The Glass Works about his experience working as an apprentice on the project.

Harry works on The Glass Works in Barnsley

What does being a Trainee Technician involve (day-to-day)?

It’s hard to say what the role of a trainee is day to day as no two days are ever the same! It usually involves walking round site and ensuring everything is going as planned and if required, working to solve any challenges that have arisen.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others?

I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to others. You are not only learning from an academic standpoint, but also getting a practical experience of the role too. You also get to learn by working alongside industry professionals who have years of experience behind them.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you began your training programme?

I wish I knew how cold it was going to be on site during the winter months, as I would have bought some thermal clothes to wear!

What is the best thing about working on The Glass Works?

The best thing about working on The Glass Works project is my colleagues. Everybody is extremely helpful, and they provide you with any support or information you may need.

In addition to this, because the project is so vast, I get to see a whole range of different trades within the construction industry at work.

What does working for Henry Boot mean to you?

Working for Henry Boot means that no matter which project I work on, I will be helping to improve the surrounding area for the local community. It also means I am contributing to the high standards of Henry Boot being delivered on all projects.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

In 10 years’ time I would like to have completed my apprenticeship with Henry Boot Construction and have possibly completed a university degree. In addition, I hope to work on a number of varied construction sites across the country and be in a higher position within Henry Boot.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

I normally like to spend my time socialising and going out with my friends, however due to the pandemic I’ve not been able to do that. So, to keep myself busy, I have enjoyed gaming with my friends and reading.
