We have recently installed a purpose-built climbing boulder at Pound’s Park – the new city centre public space under construction as part of Heart of the City.

The large rock, designed and made by specialist firm Rockworks, weighs six tonnes and stands at an impressive three-metres tall and eight-metres wide. Construction of the boulder involved creating a hand carved polystyrene core, which was then sprayed to give the sculpture a finish reminiscent of a Peak District rockface.

The boulder is designed to include multiple natural-looking hand and foot holds and be suitable for all abilities, to encourage any would-be climbers to have a go at one of the region’s most popular outdoor activities.

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Co-Chair Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, Sheffield City Council, said: “I’m delighted to see the climbing boulder successfully installed in Pound’s Park. Heart of the City is taking the creation of new public spaces to a whole new level. We are looking to build on our reputation as The Outdoor City, promote physical and mental wellbeing, and celebrate what makes us special as a place. The climbing boulder certainly does this – celebrating Sheffield’s climbing prestige and close connection to the stunning Peak District countryside.”

As the construction services provider on Pound’s Park, we were therefore tasked with the unique installation of the boulder, which involved the construction of a large reinforced concrete foundation allowing the boulder to be constructed in-situ.

Pound’s Park, named after Sheffield’s first Chief Fire Officer Superintendent John Charles Pound, will be located on the former fire station site between Rockingham Street, Wellington Street, and Carver Street.

Seen as a key piece of the Council’s Heart of the City programme, Pound’s Park is being funded by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority through the Government’s Getting Building Fund. It will provide an expansive, safe and accessible space that adds distinctive character and an element of escapism to the city’s busy urban environment. By prioritising active play and relaxation, all within a visually attractive green setting, the park aims to bring The Outdoor City ethos right into the heart of the city centre.
