An innovative scheme to construct a new 10,000 sq.ft. garden centre and retail gallery featuring 13 dedicated retail units, a 340 seat restaurant with coffee bar and outdoor terrace, farm foods hall, specialist aquatics department, external landscaping and parking for over 600 cars.

The scheme included a demanding £2 million fit out programme with extensive civil engineering works over the last six weeks of the project, including resurfacing the nearby golf course and adjoining road. The two storey entrance incorporated ‘floating’ glazing and glulam columns with exposed glulam beams.

Maintaining an excellent relationship with the design team and client enabled Henry Boot Construction to successfully overcome a number of challenging issues during the project, including those surrounding new materials and systems.

Several innovative measures were introduced on this project,
including:
• Installation of a grey water storage system to provide recycled water for toilets and the extensive irrigation system requirements.
• Use of segregated skips on site to facilitate removal of materials, resulting in 83% of materials being recycled.
• Instigation of soil stabilisation techniques to 10,000m2 of land, following flooding of the area.
• Undertaking a cut and fill rationalisation to minimise the amount of material removed from the site, generating substantial savings for the client.

The client was so satisfied with the work completed that they nominated the project for the Contract Journal Regional Contractor of the Year Award.
