Alvaston Park Changing Rooms, Derby

Alvaston Cark changing facility

Derby City Council

Key Features

  • Working in a public park
  • Ground stabilisation works
  • Potential for unexploded ordnance

£1.6m sports changing facilities located within Alvaston Park, Derby, for Derby City Council.

New build construction involving extensive ground stabilisation works, new gas main and electrical re-feed to a pump house – all undertaken whilst the park remained open to the public.

The site had the potential to contain unexploded ordnance from the Second World War, so additional health and safety procedures were put in place during the piling phase to ensure the safe operation of the works. The high water table in this area also presented challenges for the site team.

The changing rooms are of a traditionally designed steel frame construction, with beam and block floors, composite metal roof, cavity insulated walls, under floor heating and feature glazing. The building includes sports team changing and locker facilities, council offices and a cafeteria.

"The site immediately makes a good impression... with many initiatives for sustainability developed in the site set up."
