The £1.7 million project to remodel and refurbish two floors of the University of Sheffield’s Medical School, in partnership with the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STHT), to create state of the art teaching and learning facilities within the Royal Hallamshire Hospital campus.

The 24 week design and build project included the construction of a new entrance with external cladding and canopy, lively café, social hub, enhancements to the library, new offices and teaching spaces, including a number of non-sedentary work stations.

The scheme was completed within the constraints of an extremely busy city centre hospital and university site, with separate client and landlord requirements to meet, as well as extensive interaction with the Royal Hallamshire Hospital services infrastructure and facilities management teams.

Henry Boot Construction worked with the STHT for the out of hours crane lifts required to install mechanical plant, including the air handling units. Coordinating with the STHT minimised disruption to the operation of the hospital and ensured protection of the public at all times.

Henry Boot Construction delivered a tight project programme with phased occupation and handover dates, enabling students to reoccupy the premises at the start of the new academic year.

“This project has been truly transformational and has significantly changed the environment for staff and particularly students within the previous facilities... I’d have no hesitation in recommending Henry Boot to any potential client. The working relationships and the quality and ease of doing business with the firm are all important factors to the University of Sheffield when working with a valued construction partner.”
