  • Helipad, Northern General Hospital

A project to help save lives across South Yorkshire

The new helipad enables patients requiring life-saving treatment to be delivered more quickly to the waiting trauma team, and provides a dedicated office and accommodation block for staff.

The project replaced an existing helipad built more than 20 years ago which could not be used at night and was further from the A&E department, meaning a secondary ambulance was needed, taking up valuable time.

Henry Boot carried out the complex construction, incorporating many specialist materials and trades, without hesitation delivering a fully compliant helipad building in accordance with the details and specification required. Through clever sequencing the project was delivered ahead of the master programme. I would have no hesitation in recommending Henry Boot Construction to anyone considering a similarly complex project.

Through detailed analysis of the contract programme, it was possible to run phases 2 and 3 concurrently, allowing for completion of the helipad eight weeks earlier than planned. Throughout the project, constant communication with hospital and ambulance staff ensured safe access was maintained at all times.

The site team were highly commended for their understanding and help in maintaining access to A&E throughout the project. Noisy operations were also eliminated where possible and designs altered to reduce the impact of noise on the A&E department.

Every minute that we can save means the best chance of surviving for these patients. We're going to save several minutes in terms of the new position of this helipad. Our services will also be available to a bigger group of patients who historically might have been flown to an alternative trauma centre with better landing facilities.
