The £2.5 million project to construct a new helipad for Northern General Hospital enables patients requiring life-saving treatment to be delivered more quickly to the waiting trauma team, and provides a dedicated office and accommodation block, car park and public Doctor’s Surgery.

The project included the demolition of an existing building and site clearance, with a dedicated access ramp installed to the A&E department from the two storey helipad building. Specialist permanent safety netting was installed to the helipad, which was disguised with a dramatic powder-coated aluminium fascia/soff it around all sides, creating a statement design feature.

The ramp from the helipad to A&E was installed early in the programme to reduce the impact on the department, allowing it to run as normal.

The site team also ensured hospital and ambulance staff were kept well informed throughout, whilst ensuring safe access to the hospital was maintained at all times.

Through detailed analysis of the contract programme, it was possible to run phases 2 and 3 concurrently, allowing for overall completion of the helipad eight weeks earlier than planned.

A considerable amount of extra works were instructed, including the reconstruction and realignment of the carriageway outside the site. This work added up to three weeks onto the project, however, the overall works still finished five weeks ahead of schedule.

The site team were commended for their understanding and help in maintaining access to A&E throughout the project. Noisy operations were also eliminated where possible and designs altered to reduce the impact of noise on the A&E department.

“Henry Boot carried out the complex construction, incorporating many specialist materials and trades, without hesitation delivering a fully compliant helipad building in accordance with the details and specification required. Through clever sequencing the project was delivered ahead of the master programme. I would have no hesitation in recommending HBC to anyone considering a similarly complex project.”
