The CIOB Celebrating Construction in South Yorkshire Awards 2017, took place at the Cutlers Hall in Sheffield on Friday 13 October.

The CCISY awards promote a range of different sectors essential to the delivery of innovative construction, from empowering communities through corporate social responsibility and investing in skills, to create low carbon developments and being environmentally pro-active.

This year, Henry Boot won two awards together with a highly commended.  The winning categories were;

Social Value Award – Glass Works Phase 1, which, recognised our commitment towards creating a social value and employment and skills legacy in Barnsley. Our social value policy delivers tangible, proven benefits year on year. All of our projects have a very high standard when it comes to social value and providing an added value service to the local community.

The second award was for the Young Trainee of the Year Award. Lydia McGuiness joined Henry Boot at the age of 18 keen to make her mark on the world of construction.  Lydia plays a key role in introducing young people to construction, and is a supporter of women working in construction.  Along with being a Trainee Site Manager, Lydia also spends her time with apprentices on site as well as speaking at conventions such as the Women in Construction meetings. Ultimately, Lydia would one day like to become a Project Manager herself.

Highly commended was awarded for the work carried out on the Olympic Park Legacy (OLP). The OLP is set to be part of an international recognised Innovation District for health and wellbeing research and learning.  Around 3,000 people will work, learn and improve their fitness at the multi-million pound, 35 acre site, with world class sports, education, health and leisure facilities.

The chosen charity for CCISY this year was The Children’s Hospital Charity and over £2,000 was raised on the night to support their work at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

“The support of the CIOB and the Celebrating Construction in South Yorkshire Awards ceremony guests means we can transform the hospital, with world class facilities to match the world class care received by children on our wards.  Over £20,000 has now been raised by the CCISY Awards over the past 10 years and we are so grateful for their continued efforts and generous contributions to our appeal”.

David Vernon-Edwards, Director of The Children’s Hospital Charity.
