The start of demolition work of the old May Day Green shop units has begun with a celebratory ceremony held on Friday 28 October 2016.

The grand event was attended by Mayor of Barnsley Cllr Linda Burgess, who gave a fantastic speech on the future plans for the new community facility that will house the new library.

With hundreds of people attending, Strategic Business Manager Dave Woodhouse began proceedings by introducing Henry Boot Construction and outlining our aspirations as the main contractor for the Better Barnsley scheme.

The Library’s team were also presented with gifts from Henry Boot Construction and demolition contractor Hague, providing new Lego sets for The Lego Club.

The crowd began the countdown to demolition which finished with the firing of a confetti cannon and the 30 tonne Volvo demolition excavator, fitted with pulveriser jaw, started to break up the concrete.

The demolition work is expected to be completed by Christmas, making way for construction of the new community facility to begin early next year.
