Northern General Hospital helipad scheme awarded – 15/05/15

Henry Boot Construction has been awarded a contract to construct a bespoke helipad at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. The new helipad will be located close to the Accident and Emergency department and will mean that patients requiring life-saving treatment can be transferred to the Major Trauma Centre within seconds, saving valuable time.

The new scheme will include the demolition of a building and site clearance to allow for the construction of the helipad, a dedicated access ramp, together with a shell ready office accommodation block and reconfigured ambulance bay.

The project is being funded by the Sheffield Hospitals Charity which is the official NHS charity for all the Sheffield Teaching Hospital sites including the Northern General, Royal Hallamshire, Weston Park, Jessop Wing and Charles Clifford Dental hospitals.

The Sheffield Helipad Appeal ‘Saving Time, Saving Lives’ needs to raise a total of £2 million, of which around 80 per cent has already been donated or pledged.

The helipad scheme is the latest in a number of projects delivered under the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust four year framework agreement.

The project started at the end of April and will be complete in Spring 2016.

“It’s very exciting for us to see work commencing on the new helipad. We congratulate Henry Boot on winning the contract to build it and can’t wait to see the helipad start to take shape.
It’s been a long time in the planning and has been a real partnership between our Charity and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. We are presently very busy fundraising for the helipad and are confident that next year when it opens that it will make a huge difference to those needing urgent medical care in our region. ”
